Students

The Institute is very proud of our students' achievements and continually seeks ways in which to enhance their careers by supporting and updating their skills and experiences and by providing a good working/learning environment.

Honours

The Centre welcomes and encourages all students wishing to do Honours.

What is Honours?

Honours refers to a final (usually fourth) year of study which may be undertaken by students who have achieved a particular academic standard. In most cases this is a weighted average of at least 65% across the Level 3 units that form your major.

The Honours course usually consists of a combination of coursework and dissertation, although this may vary depending on School or Centre.

Why should I do Honours?

Honours is a great way to show the world how good you are! You continue to focus on your major subject(s) while developing research, time management, problem solving, communication and other useful skills.

Successfully completing an Honours project allows you to demonstrate to potential employers that you are a high achiever, committed to realising your goals, able to take responsibility for a project and work to a high standard.

It is also a necessary step to postgraduate study, if you are considering undertaking a Masters or PhD in the future.

How do I apply?

If you wish to be considered for honours, we recommend you contact the Centre to discuss your project. Applications are open to both UWA students and those from elsewhere.

Honours Application forms (also known as End-on Honours forms) for current UWA students are available from www.studentadmin.uwa.edu.au/welcome/forms.

Honours Application forms for students who complete a non-UWA degree (External Applicants form) are available from admissions.uwa.edu.au/undergrad/honours.

Applications for 2010

All students wishing to enrol in Honours for 2010 must fill in the appropriate application form (see above) and submit it to the relevant Honours Co-ordinator, Programme Co-ordinator or School.

Applications open in September 2009.

Applications received after 16 November will be processed as soon as possible, but offers may be delayed until after the Christmas break. The final application date is 21 December 2009.

Can I do Honours in more than one subject?

Yes! Joint honours courses between two or more Schools/Centres is possible. You should consult the heads of the Schools/Centres concerned to discuss the feasibility of such a programme and plan a suitable course.

Can I do Honours part time?

Honours is normally a one year full-time program.

However, part-time enrolments may be approved by the Dean in some circumstances; and subject to the approval of the head of the School/Centres and the Dean, part-time honours may be undertaken in those schools which offer an identical honours program in another faculty which is available on a part-time basis.

Are there any scholarships for Honours students?

Yes! The Scholarships Office has more information.

These are awarded on the basis of undergraduate performance in a UWA degree.

PhD

All students enroll for their degree through a university of Western Australia and undertake their research at the Institute under the supervision of an Institute researcher. Eligibility and conditions for completion of the degree are primarily those of the enrolling university.

Enrollment through a university department can be accomplished either by contacting a potential supervisor at the Institute.

For PhD and other postgraduate students, scholarships can be obtained by applying for the University and Australian Postgraduate Awards or to other organisations such as the National Health and Medical Research Council. A limited number of Institute scholarships are available so please discuss this option with a supervisor
