Clinical Research Group
The Clinical Research Group comprises specialty clinics providing diagnosis, treatment and management for patients with neuromuscular and neurological disorders. Our goal is to bring the benefits of the scientific research we undertake to ease the suffering of patents. We call it benchtop-to-bedside medicine through integrating basic research with clinical outcomes.
Referrals for patients living with Parkinson's disease, dystonia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and other disorders come from all over Western Australia. Allowing access to highly complex treatment regimes and medications. Patients also have the option to become involved with research projects, studies and drug treatment trials, such as the soon to commence Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy exon skipping trials, designed to test compounds to produce dystrophin in boys with DMD.

Inflammatory Myopathies Clinic
This Clinic was established in 1993 to manage, treat and monitor disease progression in those patients diagnosed with inflammatory myopathies including Inclusion Body Myositis, Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis. It is a unique service as both neurological (Professor Mastaglia) and Immunological (Dr Peter Hollingsworth) management strategies are offered to patients.
A Myositis Support Group has been established and the members meet quarterly at the Institute.

Movement Disorders Clinic
Parkinson's, Dystonia, Tremor
This clinic provides diagnosis and management for patients with movement disorders. The clinic remains the State Referral Centre for movement disorders, deep brain stimulation and works closely with the Neurosurgery Department at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. The Clinic is also the State Centre of Excellence for Apomine therapy and Duodopa therapy and is about to participate in a phase III clinical trial involving Duodopa. Botulinum Toxin Clinics are held in the Movement Disorders Clinic for patients with dystonia.

MS and Neuroimmunological Disorders Clinic
With the input from the Multiple Sclerosis Society's Health Corporate Network, the Multiple Sclerosis Clinics at ANRI provide diagnosis, management and education for patients with Multiple Sclerosis and other neuroimmunological disorders. As well as recognised treatment regimes, suitable patients may participate in clinical trials – both drug trials and observational studies which provide important information for ongoing therapy for patients with Multiple Sclerosis.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
The work on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy has been a focus of the Molecular Genetic Therapy Group headed by Professor Steve Wilton at the Australian Neuro-muscular Research Institute. Additional exon skipping trials to test compounds for other DMD mutations are to be run locally, backed by the Western Australian Department of Health over three years. This will involve DMD patients being treated at the ANRI clinic, supported by a $711,854 donation endorsed by the Health Minister Dr. Kim Hames.
